Our church family here is a small, loving, close-knit group of Christians trying our best to live for Christ. We’re not perfect, of course, but we’re striving each day to let God’s Word be our guide for everything we do—in everyday life, at work, at school, at church. . . everywhere. We share a common love for Jesus Christ and His church and look for opportunities to share that love with others.

Maybe you’ve realized there’s a void in your life, like something’s missing. We would love to have you as our guest! This could be a perfect opportunity to connect with Christians in this area. It’ll be a non-threatening environment, and you won’t be singled out or made to feel uncomfortable in any way. Just come join us for this simple worship service where we’ll reflect on what Jesus Christ has to say to our lives.

We’d love to see you soon. We’ve saved you a seat!

We sing without the use of any musical instruments.  "A Capella" singing, with our voices raised in harmony to God, is the only music used in our worship.  In Ephesians 5:19, Christians were exhorted to "speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing   and making melody in your heart to the Lord".  The heart is the only instrument mentioned here.  There is no Biblical authorization for the use of musical instruments in New Testament worship to God.  Early Christians were so strong in their opposition to the use of instruments in worship that no instruments appeared in worship until the sixth century A.D.  There was no general practice of instrumental music in Christianity until after the eighth century.

Singing as a part of worship at the Coquille Church of Christ has a two-fold purpose:

   (1) we know that it is pleasing and acceptable to God and

   (2) we know that it edifies and builds us up as we teach others through

our songs of praise to God.

"Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Colossians 3:16).

Visiting a new church can be intimidating. When you’re our guest at the Coquille church of Christ, you will never be asked to stand up and introduce yourself, or do any other activity that makes you feel uncomfortable. We’d just love to have you!

We want you to feel comfortable when you visit us for worship services, so here is a brief summary of what you can expect from a typical service with us:

  • Praying:  We are led by different men in our congregation (1 Timothy 2:1-8).

  • Singing:  The whole congregation joins together in praising God in song without the use of musical instruments (Ephesians 5:19Colossians 3:16). In case anyone is unfamiliar with one of the songs, the words are available in our songbooks. Many of our guests choose to join us in singing, while others prefer simply to listen as we worship.

  • Taking Communion:  Every Sunday, our members remember Christ’s death by eating unleavened bread and drinking fruit of the vine (Acts 20:7). We sit quietly for a few minutes and reflect on how wonderful it is that God loved us enough to give His own Son for us!

  • Preaching:  We will enjoy a Bible lesson that lasts about 30 minutes (Acts 2:42Romans 10:14). On most Sundays, our preaching ministers, present these lessons.

  • Giving: Each member of this congregation contributes weekly to the work of the church (1 Corinthians 16:2). We do not ask or expect our guests to give anything in the offering.

A Brief Introduction to the Churches of Christ

The church of Christ dates back to the days of the New Testament (Romans 16:16). It was founded by Christ following His death and resurrection and proclaimed by the apostles on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). In the years that followed, it rapidly grew to fill Jerusalem, then Judea, Samaria, and finally the whole Roman Empire (Acts 1:8Colossians 1:23). Churches of Christ have been greatly blessed by God with significant growth both in America and many places throughout the world.

The church of Christ is noted for its emphasis upon returning to New Testament Christianity and for its desire to unite all Christians into one body (1 Corinthians 1:10).

We believe that the New Testament is the only rule for faith and practice in religious matters (2 Timothy 3:17I Peter 4:11) and that it must authorize all that is done in Christian worship (Colossians 3:17Revelation 22:18–19). Thus we try to strictly follow the New Testament. For this reason, only "A Cappella" music is used in worship assemblies and the Lord’s Supper is observed every Sunday.

We believe the Bible teaches that sinners are saved by faith, repentance, confession, and baptism (John 3:16Mark 16:16Acts 2:38Romans 10:9–10) and that a Christian must remain faithful to the Lord after conversion (Revelation 2:10). The church of Christ is organized with elders, deacons, preachers, and members as in New Testament times (Philippians 1:1).

We believe that Jesus is the Son of God (John 20:30– 31), that the Bible is inspired of God (2 Timothy 3:16– 17), and that Jesus will return to take His kingdom (church) home to God (1 Corinthians 15:24).

We emphasize sincere worship (John 4:24), every- member evangelism (Acts 8:4), godly living (Titus 2:11–12), love for each other (John 13:33–34), and helping those in need (James 1:27).

We believe that it is possible to have religious unity in a day of division by simply following the New Testament pattern and putting aside human traditions.

To put it simply, we are seeking to be the same church one reads about in the New Testament. We aim to restore its doctrine, its practice, its lifestyle, and its zeal.

About God

We believe the most important relationship is our relationship with God (John 17:3Philippians 3:10). We believe in the one true God revealed in the Bible. He spoke the world into existence and sustains all things today. God remains active and involved in this world and in our individual lives (Gen. 1:1Heb. 1:10-1211:3).

We believe that God exists in three distinct personalities: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 13:14John 1:114John 16:12-15).

About Jesus

We believe that Jesus is the Son of God. We believe He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, shed His blood dying on a cross, was buried and raised from the dead three days later. He ascended to the Father and now reigns over his Kingdom. (Rom. 8:34Phil. 2:5-11).

We believe that Jesus is the only way to Heaven (Acts 4:12John 14:6) and is the only one qualified and able to redeem us and save us from our sins (Heb. 9:11-15). We believe that one day Jesus will return to take his own to live with him forever (Acts 1:11I Thess. 4:16-17).

About Salvation

We believe that God’s love and justice intersect at the cross. Since God is just, He cannot simply ignore or disregard our sin but because He is loving He wants to be in fellowship with us. God’s solution to our sin problem was to send Jesus to serve the death penalty due us and to reconcile us to Himself so that He might reign in our hearts and lives (2 Cor. 5:18-19I Thess. 5:9-10I Pet. 3:18Rom. 6:23). This is why the Gospel is Good News!

God has acted on our behalf but we must choose to accept or decline His gift of salvation. We accept the gift of salvation through faith. Faith is more than just intellectual assent (James 2:19); it is made complete by our actions (James 2:22). A faith-response to Jesus includes repentance (Acts 2:38), confession (Rom. 10:9) and baptism. Just as Christ died, was buried, and was raised from the dead, we also we must be buried (immersed) with Christ in baptism and then be raised to live a new life (Rom. 6:4). At the time of our baptism, our sins are taken away and the Holy Spirit comes and takes up residence in us (Acts 2:38); additionally, we are added to the Church (Acts 2:47). Throughout our lives, we are continually being transformed into the image of Christ by His Spirit who lives in us.

About Sin

We believe that our sin separates us from a Holy God (Isa. 59:2). To sin is to violate God’s law and to rebel against Him. Sin is pervasive – it consists not only in the bad things we do but also in the good things that we fail to do (James 4:17), it manifests itself not only in word and deed but also in thought (Matt. 5:28). The Bible teaches that all of us have sinned (Rom. 3:23I John 1:8-10).

About the Church

We believe that the church belongs to the Lord! It is His body and every Christian is a member of that body. It is not defined racially, socially, geographically or ethnically. The purpose of the church is to glorify God (Eph. 3:10-11). God is glorified when we grow closer to Him (Eph. 4:11-16) and when we reach out to those around us with the love of Christ (Luke 9:2).

About Christian Living

The Christian life seeks through the grace of God and the power of the Spirit to live out the way of Jesus every day. We are flawed, imperfect people, but God in His mercy is transforming us more and more into His image. Together as a church, we cling to the cross of Christ as we grow in sacrifice, service and self-emptying love (Rom. 12:1-2Gal. 5:22-252 Cor. 3:18).

What Must I Do To Be Saved?

The Scriptures are very clear about what it takes to become a child of God. Here is the simple plan revealed in God's word:

Step 1: We must HEAR the Word. Without first hearing the Word of God we would never know we are sinners and that the "wages of sin" is death Romans 3.23Romans 6.23. Without hearing, we wouldn't know of Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and our need for Him. It's also where our faith comes from Romans 10.17!  Further, we should only listen to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Matthew 17.5Hebrews 1.1-2Matthew 28.18.

Step 2: We must BELIEVE what we hear. Merely hearing the Word of God doesn't save. We must believe what we hear or we are not likely to obey God's commands. In John 8.24, Jesus says, "...if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins." Yet, belief is not enough James 2.24, we must "do" what God demands, that is, His will Matthew 7.21!

Step 3: We must REPENT of our sins. Sin is what separates us from God Isaiah 59.2. Therefore, if we intend to seek God's forgiveness, we must be willing to repent of our sins. Repentence means "turning away from sin" and making the effort to sin no more 1 Corinthains 6.9-11. If we aren't willing to repent of our sins, we cannot be saved Acts 3.19Acts 17.30-31.

Step 4: We must CONFESS our faith. Those that wish to be saved must confess their faith in Jesus Romans 10.9-10. It was Jesus Christ Himself who said, "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven" Matthew 10.32. The Scriptures give us an example of one who confessed their faith Acts 8.26-39, note verse 37.+

Step 5: We must be BAPTIZED. There is considerable religious confusion about baptism. Some think baptism isn't necessary, others believe we are saved before we are baptized. Note what the Scriptures say baptism does:

  • Baptism shows a good conscience toward God / The Apostle Peter clearly confirms, "baptism doth also now save us" 1 Peter 3.21.

  • Baptism washes away sins Acts 22.16

  • Baptism gives entry "into" Christ Romans 6.3Galatians 3.27.

  • Jesus, our authority, made baptism necessary when He gave the command in Mark 16.16. In other words, our sins are not washed away, and we are not "in Christ" until we are baptized.

  • Since baptism is for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2.38), we are still in our sins (and lost) until we are baptized.

  • We should also realize that baptism is a burial or immersion--not sprinkling Romans 6.3-4 and baptism is for believers, not infants Mark 16.16.

  • Many folks say "we aren't saved by works!" Yet, is baptism a work? It is a work of God Colossians 2.12. Jesus says belief is a work too John 6.29. James says we must have faith plus works James 2.14-26, note verse 24. We are saved by the mercy and grace of God, but He demands we be baptized to wash away our sins. He does the work through His Son's blood if we follow His instructions.

Step 6: We must remain FAITHFUL. While baptism puts us into Christ and His blood washes away our sins, we must still be obedient and faithful to God, otherwise, we will lose our souls. The Bible tells us "...be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" Revelation 2.10.

If you haven't met these conditions and you want to obey the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ today, please let us know!
